NEW! Photoshop CS5  - Just the Basics

  • Four evenings: 5/15/12 (Tuesday), 5/15/12 (Thursday), 5/22/12 (Tuesday), and 5/24/12 (Thursday)
  • At Dixie State College Community Education, (435) 652-7675
  • This is an abbreviated version of the full Photoshop class. Topics we will learn: Files, Bridge, Camera Raw, Basic Adjustments, Basic Tools, Basic Filters, and an Intro to Layers and Masks. (File theory, Color theory, Color management, and Output are reserved for the full class which will resume in the Fall.) This is a great opportunity for you to get a grasp on Photoshop in four enjoyable, understanding evening classes. Two weeks and we’re all done. Just think, before Memorial Day you will have a handle on efficiently processing all your summer images. How cool is that? All of this content will also apply to version CS5 of Photoshop.
  • Registration fee $75; materials fee $20 to instructor

  • Target group: students that already own or will purchase Photoshop (not Elements)

Basic Photography and Composition (in a day)

  • One full Saturday on 5/19/2012
  • At Dixie State College Community Education, (435) 652-7675
  • This class provides 8 hours of truly understandable, enjoyable training in the core fundamentals of making impressive pictures and using a camera effectively. (This class does not involve any complex aspects of computer processing. Start out right — start in the camera.)  All questions clearly answered. 
  • The following topics will be covered:
    • Exposure principles: Light, Aperture, Shutter Speed, ISO. 
    • Proper application of various lenses and tripods.
    • Focusing techniques, depth-of-field.
    • Dealing with lighting and weather conditions.
    • Composition and aesthetics. 
    • How to set your camera for personal control. 
    • Using memory cards and card readers.
    • Loading your files into the computer and organizing them. 
    • Tips on scenics, people, candids, and pets.
    • Tips on close-ups. 
  • Registration fee $60; materials fee $15 to instructor
  • Bring your camera and the camera manual. Typically, attendees have (or will buy) a digital SLR camera (any will suffice) or a digital point-and shoot camera (only if it is flexible enough to allow manual settings). Many people consider this course as a way to familiarize themselves with their new camera acquisition or to become informed to plan for a downstream purchase. The camera you have is probably just fine. Bring it and your camera’s manual. 
  • This class is targeted at people that are just beginning to develop an interest in serious photography and want to get started on the right foot. 
    • This includes people that feel they have been shooting for several years on “automatic” camera modes and want to benefit from more personal control of the camera. 
    • The last types of candidate attendee are those that have been away from the craft for a while and would like a good refresher on the basics, with a slant on digital.

NEW! Adobe Lightroom 4 – Just the Basics

  • Three evenings on 6/5/12 (Tuesday), 6/7/12 (Thursday), and 6/12/12 (Tuesday)
  • At Dixie State College Community Education, (435) 652-7675
  • This is an abbreviated version of the full Lightroom class. Here’s whats new: this will be taught using and demonstrating the new features of Lightroom 4. Topics we will learn: Library, Develop, Map, Print, and Book Modules. (File theory, color theory, color management, Web module, and Slide Show module are reserved for the full class which will resume in the Fall.) This is a great opportunity for you to get a grasp on Lightroom in three enjoyable, understanding evening classes. Less that two weeks and we’re all done. Just think, before mid-June you will have a handle on efficiently processing all your summer images. How cool is that? All of this content will also apply to version 3 of Lightroom.
  • Registration fee $60; materials fee $15 to the instructor

  • Target group: students that already own or will purchase Lightroom

Photoshop Elements in a Day

  • One full Saturday on 6/9/2012, 
  • At Dixie State College Community Education, (435) 652-7675
  • Photoshop Elements is the most popular consumer photography software on the market. It is versatile, fun, affordable, and oriented to help you do what you want without all the intricacies of the full-blown Photoshop CS6 product. 8 hours of class time will cover: the Organizer Module, the Edit Module, the Create Module, and the Share Module.
  • This class will be taught using and demonstrating the new features of Photoshop Elements 10. This is a great opportunity for you to get a grasp on Photoshop Elements in an enjoyable, understanding classes. One day and we’re all done. Just think, before mid-June you will have a handle on efficiently processing all your summer images. How cool is that? All of this content will also apply to versions 8 and 9 of Photoshop Elements.

NEW! Scenic Photography

  • Held on one evening, 6/14/12 (Thursday). 
  • At Dixie State College Community Education, (435) 652-7675
  • Do you realize we live in the area photographers around the world consider the scenic motherload? Your instructor, Bob Kulon, will share his deep experience with natural scenic from grande landscapes to intimate vignettes. This is the first time this class will be offered; get in while the rest of the year is ripe for the picking. 
  • Here are the topics we will explore:
    • Finding Locations, Scenes, and Vantage Points.
    • Picking the right lens and filter.
    • Predicting Light conditions and timing.
    • Compositional Guidelines for effective scenics.
    • Exposure and focus considerations.
    • Operating your gear to get the best results.
    • How to plan ahead for post-processing.
  • Registration fee $25; materials fee $10 to instructor
  • This course assumes you will be operating a Digital SLR (DSLR) camera and know how to operate it for basic use. Basic Point-and-shoot cameras are not appropriate.
  • Bring your camera gear and the camera manual.
