Achieving distinctive results with digital methods

Printing Services

Frustrated by the small size of your display prints?

Let’s say you have a digital file and you want to print it in a size larger than your printer can accommodate. Typically you are an Epson 2xxx user (or a Canon or HP user of equivalent printers) limiting you to a 13″ carriage width. I’m offering to make that larger print for you for a reasonable fee.

NOTE: I do not have the time, inclination nor capacity to develop this printing activity on a large scale. Instead, I am seeking to establish a friendly, long-term relationship with a limited number of enthusiast and professional photographers to whom I can be of assistance to our mutual benefit. I ask that you contact me via e-mail or phone before using this service. This will ensure that you won’t be disappointed if I can’t do your print because I am on a shoot, show, or workshop for 2 weeks.

Treat yourself to spectacular large format prints of your best work, up to 24″ wide by 72″ long, without breaking the bank! I will print your digital files on my large-format Epson 7900 using Ultrachrome© HDR pigmented inks for spectacular color rendition and accuracy. The Ultrachrome© HDR inks offer a the widest color gamut and an incredible light fastness of 100+ years on the media. I currently stock Red River 68# Ultra Pro Satin paper, with a neutral white and lustre finish that feels and looks like traditional photographic papers. The results are superb with this premium stock. The entire reproduction system has been profiled for true accuracy. (Accordingly, I expect you to use a calibrated monitor on your end.)

If you want to make prints larger than the 13″x19″ limit of most consumer printers, send me your self-prepared digital files on CD-R or DVD-R and I’ll print them for you at a very reasonable price.

Print Sizes & Pricing

Below is the price list for prints on Red River 68# Ultra Pro Satin paper. For a large volume of prints, ask for volume pricing. Unstated sizes are $10 per square foot of media consumed.

  • 8.5×11 sheet $7
  • 13×19 sheet $15
  • 17×22 sheet $25
  • 24×36 sheet $50
  • 13×38 sheet (panorama) $35

Inks, Paper & Profiles

I print using the newest Ultrachrome HDR inks and high gamut fine art paper for the ultimate tonal range, color accuracy, and longevity. I religiously maintain accurate color profiles using a X-Rite i1 instrument. To ensure color accuracy, the color space that you used in preparing your files should be embedded within the file (ProPhoto, Adobe RGB, or sRGB).

File Preparation

Save your files in TIFF or native PSD.

Your files must be color-corrected and output sharpened by you, all layers should be flattened. The color space profile you’ve used to color-correct your image should be embedded within the file. I will NOT make any adjustments to your files. It is your responsibility to prep your files for printing. The service I provide to you is that of printing your own pre-flighted files on my wide-carriage professional printer at a very reasonable cost. Your best bet to ensure satisfactory results is to proof your print first on a profiled consumer photo printer such as an Epson 2880. There might be minor variations in color due to the 7900’s stricter tolerance, more sophisticated print head and more accurate profiling.

File Size

Your file’s resolution should be anywhere between 180 dpi and 300 dpi. It is possible to get excellent results with a resolution as low as 180 dpi, when starting from a very good original image. There is no real benefit to using a resolution higher than 240 dpi in a large print destined to be seen from a distance. If you wish to print a large file but your image doesn’t have enough megabytes, I can up-res it for you using Genuine Fractals.

Shipping & Handling

Prints are wrapped face down inside a rigid Kraft mailing tube, between sheets of buffered wrapping tissue. Each tube can accommodate up 3 prints. There is a flat shipping & handling fee of $15. I ship via U.S. postal service Priority Mail. I can offer shipping to business addresses using UPS Next Day or 2nd Day, at actual cost per UPS’s rates.

Print of the Month #1 Announced

Print Of The Month Program

Anza-Borrego Scrub Hills
Bob Kulon’s Print of the Month #1 – April, 2009

This piece is presented as an 11×14 fine art print, matted and framed to 16×20 dimensions. During the feature month, the price is reduced 20% with shipping and handling included. After that, remaining stock is sold at prevailing price plus shipping and handling.

What that means to you is that you can acquire this piece during April, 2009 for only $120, shipping and handling included. Normally, this edition would be priced at $150 plus $30 shipping and handling. That is a 33% saving when you order it during the feature month.

About this Particular Image

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is located in Southern California. I went there on a shoot in mid-March, 2009 seeking desert wildflower macros for my catalog. When you have a decided goal, it pays to keep and open mind. This particular image appeared at the summit of the Carrizo Badlands Overlook. It was late afternoon and the group decided to wait out sunset. In the angular light this soft rendition of the hills emerged. The scene was visibly hazy and blah; most overlooked its inner beauty. I was immediately struck by the fact that by simply expanding its tonal range, a subtle glow would emerge. The mood is intended to be soothing and imaginative.

This particular shot was captured on my Canon 5D Mark II camera using a 70-200mm f/2.8 L lens set at f/16. As always, my trusty Gitzo tripod held everything stable in the stiff wind.

The print is made to 11×14 dimensions using the very latest Epson 7900 Ultrachrome HDR pigment inks. These exhibit extraordinary permanence and tonal detail when paired with my paper of choice, Ilford Galerie Gold Fiber Silk.

The presentation is matted with white Archival Bainbridge stock. The mat will be signed in pencil on the left and the numbered edition will be indicated on the left. It is conservation mounted (hinged) to acid-free foam core. Finally, it is glazed in acrylic (no breakage) and delivered in a black Nielsen gallery frame that is consistent for all Prints of the Month (should you wish to acquire a collection over time). A certificate of authenticity will be included.
Shipping & Handling

The framed print, as prepared, is quite durable. No glass is used. The frame is metal. It will be securely packed and protected and shipped in a flat container via UPS ground. The shipment will be insured.

The main website returns!

Since relocating, I have put redesigning and presenting my professional website on the back burner. I was waiting for fresh images, a bit of inspiration, and a focus for my enterprise. I am now past that and the new website has officially rolled out. A fair amount of it will be grown over coming days and weeks as I have time to add the content, but I think you should visit now to get reacquainted and bookmark it.
