Achieving distinctive results with digital methods

The Red Coast

Recently, if you will recall, I spoke about Dick Edington’s newly published book, Great Lakes Lighthouses. In a moment of inspiration, I found that the first 6 entries all had something in common – they were all trimmed in red and looking good. This is the perfect time of year to photograph these scenes due to lack of crowds, low sun angles, clean air, and frost.

This morning I ventured out alone for a few days to try my hand at doing these lighthouse right. I call this “The Red Coast” in honor of the red trim on the lighthouses. All of my trip will be on the lower six lighthouses of Lake Michigan starting at Michigan Cirty, Indiana.

I arrived today at 3:00 PM and found conditions perfect. I only had time for about 100 pictures before dark. Here’s a few I worked on. I hope you enjoy them.

[Postscript: Unfortunately I needed to cut this trip short due to personal business back home. Oh well.]

New Book: Richard Edington: Great Lakes Lighthouses

Last night I had a delightful evening at the Wooster Camera Club giving a presentation, I was invited by Richard Edington, the club’s Vice President. Frankly, these club events just keep getting better and better for me – great people, engaging disscusion, and meaningful networking.

My topic for the evening was “Learn To Be Still”, a presentation meant to motivate people to plan their work for improved, distinctive results. I followed by a video show of my work from the Pacific Northwest created earlier this year.

Before the meeting, Richard privately mentioned that he would be announcing his first ever book, “The Photographers’ Guide to Great Lakes Lighthouses”. This was a source of great accomplishment for him as well as a publication of immediate interest to me. I have a “thing” for lighthouses. That became obvious by my presentation and show to follow. I find them compelling subjects.

If you feel the same way, I urge you to check out Richard’s new book. It is richly illustrated with truly fine photography covering 27 lighthouses of the central Great Lakes. As if that weren’t enough, this book is a photographer’s compendium listing

  • Distinguishing Features
  • Best time of day
  • Suggested Compositions
  • Sunrise Sunset possibilities
  • Other pertiant info
  • Directions including GPS coordinates

Folks, this is a amazing compilation. I immediately snapped up a copy. Guess what I’ll be exploring this Winter? Gas up the old Pilot.
