4 New Saturday Clinics Sponsored by HVAA
In conjunction with Hurricane Valley Arts Alliance (HVAA), we are pleased to announce four new one day clinics to be held in Hurricane, Utah. If you will recall, these are the great folks that recently sponsored my successful DSLR Boot Camp.
Each of these clinics are independent – you can pick and choose, mix and match, to suit your individual needs. They are held mid-day on Saturdays in late September and early October. These clinics will take place at the Rainbow Canyon Community Building in Hurricane, Utah. The clinics run from 9 AM to 4 PM with an hour break for lunch. My Art Fair Booth ~ Logan, Utah
Almost every weekend I take off to participate in Art Fairs/Shows. Some of these are local, like the Tuacahn Saturday Market. Some of them required jury selection and I travel a distance to set up my booth and vie for customers for my Fine Art Prints. I know that many of you that read this blog are personal friends. Today I thought I would give you a glimpse of my “on the road” setup.
Last weekend I was in Logan, Utah; about 300 miles north of my home base in St. George, Utah. I set up my current booth design and took some pictures before the crowds arrived…
New Website!
Friends, my new website is up and running. Please visit it and let me know your impression: www.bobkulonphoto.com. While you are there, you will note…

Bob
New Shows Added

Print of the Month #1 Announced
Print Of The Month Program

Anza-Borrego Scrub Hills
Bob Kulon’s Print of the Month #1 – April, 2009
This piece is presented as an 11×14 fine art print, matted and framed to 16×20 dimensions. During the feature month, the price is reduced 20% with shipping and handling included. After that, remaining stock is sold at prevailing price plus shipping and handling.
What that means to you is that you can acquire this piece during April, 2009 for only $120, shipping and handling included. Normally, this edition would be priced at $150 plus $30 shipping and handling. That is a 33% saving when you order it during the feature month.
About this Particular Image
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is located in Southern California. I went there on a shoot in mid-March, 2009 seeking desert wildflower macros for my catalog. When you have a decided goal, it pays to keep and open mind. This particular image appeared at the summit of the Carrizo Badlands Overlook. It was late afternoon and the group decided to wait out sunset. In the angular light this soft rendition of the hills emerged. The scene was visibly hazy and blah; most overlooked its inner beauty. I was immediately struck by the fact that by simply expanding its tonal range, a subtle glow would emerge. The mood is intended to be soothing and imaginative.
This particular shot was captured on my Canon 5D Mark II camera using a 70-200mm f/2.8 L lens set at f/16. As always, my trusty Gitzo tripod held everything stable in the stiff wind.
The print is made to 11×14 dimensions using the very latest Epson 7900 Ultrachrome HDR pigment inks. These exhibit extraordinary permanence and tonal detail when paired with my paper of choice, Ilford Galerie Gold Fiber Silk.
The presentation is matted with white Archival Bainbridge stock. The mat will be signed in pencil on the left and the numbered edition will be indicated on the left. It is conservation mounted (hinged) to acid-free foam core. Finally, it is glazed in acrylic (no breakage) and delivered in a black Nielsen gallery frame that is consistent for all Prints of the Month (should you wish to acquire a collection over time). A certificate of authenticity will be included.
Shipping & Handling
The framed print, as prepared, is quite durable. No glass is used. The frame is metal. It will be securely packed and protected and shipped in a flat container via UPS ground. The shipment will be insured.

In the back of my mind
I am moving to St. George, Utah – that is hardly news. The reason, put simply, involves opportunity, climate, quality of life, spiritual growth, a natural beauty.
I wanted to mention a few ideas I have that may be of interest to my NE Ohio friends. No promises, but here’s what my sketchy plans are…
- Workshops – I will be organizing popular destination Photo Tours commencing this Fall. Conceptually, these will involve the obvious (Zion, Bryce, etc.) as well as the hundreds of insider secret locations that have equally glorious scenery and easier access. The durations and timings will be a bit varied. Weekends, mid-week, all-week. There will be much assistance in the field, but no classroom component itself. Note: for Zion workshops, we must wait until November for automotive access, prior to that park tour buses must be used. I plan an October photo tour with golden aspens; December or January tour for special winter vantages.
- One-On-One – this will become a very large part of what I do. For people wanting the personal insight into advanced methods, discovery of those little out of the way treasures, and specific interests. I will book myself by the day. Here’s the deal. You fly into Vegas on your dime; I’ll pick you up and cart you around in my SUV; I’ll put you up in my guest bedroom/bath in the Heart of St.George; I’ll pay for gas; you pay for all your own meals. Price? $495/day or portion thereof. Subject to availability.
- Fine Art Fairs – I am not giving up on this. The market out West is much healthier and I am doing some long range planning. Obviously, my catalog will change dramatically to suit the market. I will be doing Western Landscapes, floral macros, stone abstracts, graphic derivatives, black and white. My urban abstract work and garden work will probably be reserved for my own pleasure and enjoyment. I am phasing out note cards except for smaller fill-in shows. I intend to open a real online store to avail you of my new Western work in finished editions.
- Instruction – I intend to become an operative instructor rather than an entrepreneur. I will be seeking teaching gigs with colleges, tourist spas, and community organizations. DSLR Boot Camp will take a back seat for a while – great concept, but I’m the new kid in town. I need to establish credibility.

It's all in my backyard!
Live from the Butler Holiday Show in Youngstown!
OK, OK, it’s not all that dramatic. That is, unless you are me.
I have one day to go to wrap up the American Holiday Arts and Craft Show at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown.
This has far exceeded my expectations and is projected to be my most successful venture to date. Aside from an appreciative audience, I find myself in company of many new friends, professional artists, and eager staff helping out.
I am especially grateful to Jack Haims and Ken Platt of the Butler for making me feel welcome and invited. You guys have big hearts and it shows!
The show closes tomorrow. It is open from 10 Am to 4 PM. I hope you can make it.
The following picture was taken at night, handheld, so this is the best I could do with my Canon g9, but you get the idea…

My booth in the main hall
Next Show: Butler Institute in Youngstown – December 6 & 7, 2008
I invite you to visit my booth at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown this coming weekend. The Butler event is called the American Holiday Fine Arts and Craft Show. The Butler is located adjacent to the University of Youngstown. Their address is 524 Wick Avenue. Hours are Saturday from 10-5 and Sunday from 10-4.
Free Parking – Entertainment – Refreshments Available – Admission $5
This will be an exciting show and sale of the works of over 100 fine artists, craftspersons, amd artisans.
By way of introduction, my current adapted indoor booth format will be on display…
Summer seems so far in the past!

I was just reviewing some booth photos I need to organize for my 2009 jury submittals and realize that time has really escaped unnoticed. How about you?
This picture was from the September 20th Johnny Appleseed Festival. That seems like ages ago.
Oh well, time marches on. Next up is five straight weeks of Holiday Art Shows. These will be different for me – they are larger, much better planned, indoors, heavilly advertized, and more widespread within the region.
I will have much more ready to hang art available, just in time for gift purchases. My prices remain accessible. Stop by and say hello, OK?
